Peptides: The Future of Wellness and Vitality

You might be familiar with peptides, even if you don’t realize it. They’ve been around for decades, i.e. since birth, and if you’ve heard of Functional or Longevity Medicine, you’ve likely come across them.

How so? Let me go over some basics.

What are Peptides?

Many of you are familiar with amino acids, probably from biology class, or maybe from a supplement such as Lysine, BCAAs (Leucine, Isoleucine, valine), Arginine. In humans, there are 20 common amino acids of which 9 are essential; we must get them from food. There are more than 500 amino acids found in nature 🤯 Ok, how does this fit in with peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Think like stringing popcorn during Christmas. String many chains together and you get a protein. These peptides are signaling molecules that send messages that control many aspects of how the body functions. Your body makes peptides all the time. The most famous peptide that you may be familiar with is insulin, which helps regulate your blood sugar.

Peptides and Longevity Medicine

Peptides are being used more and more to help improve the quality of life of people. There are many uses for peptides with great outcomes and little to no side effects, but as with all things good, the Overlords (FDA and Big Pharma) don’t want these out there. Navigating the regulations imposed by the regulatory agencies can be challenging.

The following are some common peptides and their uses:

  • Semaglutide and Tirzepatide (Ozempic and Mounjaro respectively) are used for diabetic management and off-label weight loss and cardiovascular disease support.

  • CJC 1295 and Ipamorelin - growth hormone related peptides that help with improving workout performance and recovery, muscle mass, energy, sleep.

  • AOD 9604 - used for weight loss and metabolic function

  • Selank and Semax - used for anxiety and cognitive health

  • Thymosin Alpha 1 - used for regulating immune system

  • BPC 157, KPV, TB-500 - used for reducing inflammation and speeding up tissue repair. It is often used for those recovering from injuries.

  • Cerebrolysin - used for cognitive function

  • GHK - used for wound healing and aesthetics

  • DSIP - used for improving sleep

  • PT-141 - used for improving libido

  • And more!

As you can see there are many peptides with many different uses. I have seen great outcomes in patients using peptides, mainly the CJC/Ipamorelin or semaglutide. They report improved sleep quality, better recovery from exercising, weight loss, better blood sugar regulation, and more. Very little to no side effects were reported. It is a great option if you’re looking to improve your quality of life.

One good and one bad news: Despite their benefits, not all peptides are available. Due to regulatory restrictions by the FDA, some peptides have been temporarily banned. However, as of early October 2024, some of the peptides recently came off the banned list - Thank Goodness! This means we can expect compounding pharmacies to begin making them again. Where to Find Peptides?

There are many places where peptides are found. There are dietary sources of peptides such as collagen powders. There are some other over-the-counter/online sources. You want to make sure you get peptides from a reputable source. Some peptides are considered drugs and must be prescribed by a healthcare provider.
